Yaay~ New wave of anime flooding the net~
As always, I’d likely watch the first episodes only so not gonna hijack the "currently watched anime" thread. Tongue
Here’s my 2 cents on some new stuff.

Simoun (Compliments - Doremi)
Hmm… This one I don’t get what’s going on so it’s best not to take anything I say seriously. Wished that they explained the terminology used in this anime. What I can say is, in this story, the Craftsman Nation is at war with the Imperial Nation. Following the exploits of the Imperial Nation’s air-force wing, which consists of female pilots (referred as Simula), piloting some sort of  advanced aeriel battle machines called Simoun (referred by them as machines made by God, due to their manouverablility in air), they are up against the Craftman Nation’s air hoard. As their numbers slowly fall, they are in a race against time to unlock the secrets to the machine, which is also sought by their enemies.

Character wise, here everyone is born female. When they reach adulthood, they can choose to become males by going to a spring. Problem is, only females can pilot the Simoun so…females everywhere. And due to the Craftman’s attacks, the first episode serves more as an introduction to the setting of the story instead of an introduction to the players. Even the main character (I’m betting on it), was only introduced towards the end of the episode. She’d fit the stereotype bratty girl if you ask me, especially with her looks. Cool

Action wise, the Imperial’s official battle Simoun are 2-(wo)man planes, if that’s what you call them. Powered by some sort of crystal, they use some sort of magic attacks by drawing patterns in the sky (what the…?). Not shown though, are how the patterns actually destroy the enemy (no fun…). Craftman’s planes are torpedo-like propeller powered crafts with machine guns as weapons, plain simple and effective especially when they have mass-production on their side. The main character took a single seater training Simoun out at the end of the episode… I can pretty much tell where this is heading. And I’m not impressed by the Simoun’s design too.

Download priority
On a scale of 5, with 5 being most desireable, I give it a 2. No, not even the yuri-esque kissing to start up the machine can save it from getting a better rating from me. Especially when it doesn’t look that impressive to begin with. Maybe I’ll still give ep2 a shot. If it still fails to impress, I guess it’ll remain low priority on my download list.

Ouran High School Host Club (Compliments - Lunar)
Sometimes, there are animes that come along and make you crave for more. To me, this is one of them. Haruhi is a bookworm in the ultra prestigious Ouran High (which, in other words, means it’s filled with obscenely rich people), and while looking for a silent place to study (that’s how she got in in the first place, since she doesn’t meet the above image of the school) she bumps into the Host Club and breaks a very expensive vase. From there on, she has to serve the Club to settle the debt. Sounds lame? Yes, but I beg to differ. I did read a few chapters of the manga before and found it amusing too.

The Host Club can be likened to be the male version of GROs, more of companions for a cup of tea or to have a conversation with but with a difference – You have to pay for it. Here, we have a bunch of bishounen to cater to the different tastes of their customers, from the vain, sweet talking Tamaki (also known as the King of the club), Honey who personifies shota (the male equivalent to female loli), a set of twins who play out some bl scenes, Mori who doesn’t talk much, and another guy with glasses who potrays the smart & cool side. (argh I’m soo bad with names). I find them very likeable, especially when they exaggerate the differences between their lifestyle and Haruhi’s lifestyle (Rich vs commoners, in other words, us). Instant coffee anyone?

The gags are fun and they come in abundance, definitely a big plus for it.

Download priority
5 – Definitely one that I’ll be chasing this season. Except for action fans, critical-thinking fans or those who can’t stand the tiniest bit of bl, I don’t see why anyone would stay away.

Strawberry Panic! (Compliments - SRN)
Ooo boy, another anime that has virtually no males in it. The story is about Nagisa, a girl who just transferred to St. Miatre academy. The academy is a part of 3 integrated girls-only academies on a hill. From the early on, she bumps into a mysterious girl (was it Shizuma? bah I hate remembering names) every now and then in isolated areas. Nagisa is fascinated by her beauty, and the other girl seems to enjoy making moves on her (Anyone wanna shout yuri~?). Later it is revealed that the girl is actually the star of the 3 academies… And you can smell the jealousy when they both get together, with the unwilling Nagisa unable to resist her advances.

Graphics wise, it doesn’t look as crisp as the current titles. Maybe due to the fansubbers?
Anyway, the characters look nice enough even with the low video quality.

Content wise, not much can be said yet. Just a simple introduction to the setting.

Download priority
Hmm… a 3. I’ve read 3 chapters of the manga while waiting for the download and if it’s anything to go by, the yuri level would slightly raise beyond the usual hug and kiss part, but not till it recieves a 18+ warning. That alone should tell you who the target audience is. I say, average, until I watch the next episode.

Shinigami’s Ballad (Compliments – Triad)
Sorry guys, not talking bout a spinoff of  the popular anime with shinigamis in it. Tongue
Here, we have a pretty normal slice of life anime. Difference is, the lead character is a shinigami (Shame if you still don’t know what it means – The Grim Reaper’s name in japanese )... If you smell death in the air, that’s the right feel for this. Momo (the lead character), is a shinigami in white (not black, mind you). Her duty? What else, minus the spirit bashing of the above mentioned anime. Cool Along with her pet (vampire cat anyone? What else do you call a cat with bat wings?) and her scythe, she claims the lives of those who have “expired”. With death all around, I put my money on this being an episodic anime (It’s only 6 ep long too).
In the first ep, we have them building on the relationship of a boy and a girl. They have feelings for each other but cannot express it. Add in the asthma factor the girl has… It’s a sad end for them. And that’s where Momo comes in. Due to the girl’s unfinished busniess in the living realm, she let’s the dead speak to the living. Only when the dead is content can they leave the living world.

Comments
I don’t know. Looked like a run of the mill relationship story, with a death at the end of it.
This anime is supposed to invoke angst, but having had some harder hitting sad stories under my viewing belt, it didn’t move me much. Momo looks nice, even with her cold expression. Add a scythe to the look, and you might either be scared or be fascinated.
My verdict is… Average. Nothing special, but not dull either.
Memorable quote : “I cry for the dead because the dead cannot cry”, or something like that when teased by her cat for shedding tears for the soul she just collected.

Princess Princess (Compliments aarinfantasy & kiss-sub)
A guy goes to an elite all-boys school. Poor things, they only have guys to interact with. So the school has a bright idea and practices , as the lead says, a weird custom – having the selected bishounens dress up in frilly dresses to “raise morale” (did I just say that? *sweatdrop*). They are called himes’ (princesses, if you didn’t know), and, like any other school positions, have to carry out their duties when required. Duties include – Cheerleading, morale boosting etc (And if the OP is to be believed, they’ll have to dress for other occasions, including as nurses & maids). The lead character doesn’t know a thing about these until it’s too late – He gets voted as a candidate. So I guess, that’s where this story begins.

Comments
Oh boy (pardon the pun), looks like a guys-only anime, and I’m not referring to the audience. Is it me or is there more and more anime that play on the gender topic? I’m not calling it anything yet, as nothing definitive has been shown as where this is heading. The hime get to use their normal voices, which might be weird for some viewers who can’t accept differences between what they see and what they hear. Furthermore, currently wondering how does a guy with short hair turn up with long hair. A wig perhaps… A REALLY good wig. I say, a very wierd premise to a story, having people dress up to make up for the lack of the opposite gender. Oh well, it’s an anime so logic goes out the window. Other than that, just take it as a all-boys school life anime.
Verdict – 3. I don’t mind watching it. But I guess those who dislike bl stuff should stay away.

Today in class 5-2 (Compliments – Triad)
Slice of life anime, with a little more ecchi scenarios. Satou and his 5 friends, divided equally on gender, cope with the tribulations of growing up and reaching puberty, if I’m not wrong. That’s where the ecchi elements come in.

Comments
One episode, divided into 5 segments. Kinda like a scenario-based anime. Light-hearted. I liked the first segment of the first episode the most though compared to the others, although I wonder if chewing on something actually relieves people when their milk teeth is about to fall out. And I liked Satou’s expressions, which kinda remind me of the lead guy in Dokuro-chan.
Verdict – 4. Might be a nice watch whenever there’s time.

A slightly older title
Rec (DL from Ayu)
A guy in working in the wrong department in an advertising agency, a girl wanting to be a seiyuu (voice actress). They meet up by chance at a movie theatre, and their relationship begins.

Being 10+ minutes long per ep (half of the normal stuff), there’s nothing much to be said.
I like the girl. She’s cute. Their relationship doesn’t look too dull either. Tongue
Seems to be one of those slice-of-life type of titles, just like Genshiken potraying the otaku life, Rec seems to potray the life of a voice actress.

I already have the full set of 9 episodes. Might be a good time filler given it’s length.

That's a good first impression DD.

If it's me, I can't even describe what the hell the Simouns are doing except that they're flying around, drawing patterns in the sky, kabooming down to earth before the patterns started to effect...
But I really like the art of the series. Not many series can make watercolor look that good!

Onwards to Strawberry Panic.
Shizuma is a vampire (no that's not true ). More yuri. End of story.
I reccommend waiting for the Doremi sub to come out.

Well, both Simoun and Strawberry Panic is targeted towards yuri fans (Simoun manga is shown in Yuri Hime, meanwhile Strawberry Panic... just see the ED and you'll know it )
Not that I've anything against it... because i'm too a yuri fan Cheesy

Ouran High School Host Club
More Haruhi? Commoner food? Weird stuff that rich people like?
My first impression is, "Oh, Haruhi is much cuter than in the manga!"
but looking again at the jokes, it seems that the manga is much more funnier. Maybe it's the static-ness of the manga...

NANA
A favorite of mine. Finally my prayers have been answered, arigato Kami-sama!!
More NANA, more shoujo, more angst!

xxxHoLic
It's what i'm expected after watching the movie and reading the manga. Weirdness & more weirdness. Kudus CLAMP!

.hack//ROOTS
Bee Train stuff confuses the hell out of me. Need more episodes to finally understand the plot the series is going. Love the OP & ED of the series. FictionJunction YUUKA and ALI PROJECT are the lifesaver!

High School Girls
School Girls that's on crack. I wish Marimite would be like this...

DD>> abt the ouran koukou... did they mention that those girls have to pay for it? i mean, in the manga it was not revealed until Vol 3 that the 'princesses' who asked for them, pay no money at all. So how did they make money?

well... read the spoiler at the end if you want. otherwise skip it! but i dunno whether that part--there'll be any different with the anime...

some here... ^^ juz to add on...

xxx Holic
had been following the manga for some time ... so u can guess i'd been anticipating the anime.

It starts off with Watanuki--your not-so-average high schooler (well, they are either average or not). He has the ability to see what you call 'lost spirits' and they had been bugging him. These lost spirits are somewhat attracted to his 'blood' which he inherits from his parents.

It is not until he stumbled upon Yuuko's shop and touched on the fence which is the dimensional barrier that drives those spirit away that his life changed forever. Yuuko's shop 'sell' wishes or rather, grant them in exchange for a price. She offered to grant Watanuki's wish which is--for the lost spirits to leave him alone--but Watanuki who had nothing valuable with him to pay for the price, is the ordered to work at Yuuko's shop as part timer until the debt had been met and she'll call it even and grant his wish (unfortunately his debt kept increasing as he worked there ^^;Wink...

"In order to gain something of value, the price can be anything of equal value as nothing greater can be gained, nothing greater can be lost. The perfect equal value... and balance. Or else harm will come...to your spacial existence, your divined fate and your heavenly spirit..." ... That phrase reminds me of FMA haha, law of alchemist--exchange of something with equal value...

"Coincidence is nothing but illusion... there is only fate." is what Yuuko said and i think she's got a point sometimes ^^ ...

Air Gear
... i downloaded it for fun coz there wasnt much to follow ^^ ... after watching it, i found that it wasn't that bad ^^ kinda funny and interesting (but rather typical and predictable sometimes).

It starts off with the new invention AirTrex, similar to a roller blade but AirTrex have special functions eg. it allows the 'wearer' to jump, or 'fly' accordingly, have the ability to 'understand' what the 'wearer' wants it to do...

Ikki, our 13 yr old protagonist is not only a pervert but also clueless about AirTrex. he stays with 4 beautiful sisters who has a secret identity--they are very good with AirTrex and known as the group Sleeping Forest, which is totally unknown to Ikki. However Ikki after being humiliated and lost in a fight, discovered the room where the sisters hid their AirTrex. While the others are having a bath, Ikki took a pair and tried it out. It was rather amusing as he had no idea how to use them and had problem operating it.

without knowing, he landed on a shop where gears and appliances of AirGear are sold. the obasan there--upon hearing he's one of the Sleeping Forests' rookie asked her husband to lead Ikki to a 'meeting' where all AirTrex members gather and meet up. Ikki saw the girl of his dreams--Simca and how people slam their emblem on her backside (hem), he wanted to do the same while holding Sleeping Forest's emblem. After much effort on catching up with Simca, Ikki managed to slam it on her BUT he stick it on top of another gp's emblem which meant that he's challenging them...

School Rumble--2nd Semester
kicks off with a summary of semester 1 and the Tenma's misunderstanding between Harima and Yakumo's relationship. The misunderstanding deepens when Harima unconsciously promised Tenma to take care of her sister @@ ... neway the later part (Epi 2 onwards) will focus on their class's cultural festival and the survival game where the class is divided into 'Play Faction' led by Harima and 'Cafe Faction' led by Hanai...

havent DL princess princess and Gakuen Heaven but read both the manga... quite okay i think ... ^^

ouran koukou SPOILER: according to the manga, they make money via online auction through their website ... for example the fork, spoon and plate that Honey-chan used will be open for auction and these money became the club's fund ^^

Just watched xxxHolic. I'm definitely looking forward to this anime... the opening and ending theme are great, and though it's hard to get used to the long limbs, but I guess that's Holic's trademark for you. ^^

I'm also looking out for Tsubasa Chronicles 2nd season. I'm actually quite disappointed with the anime... the 1st season wasn't really that good... Oh well. I hope it gets better!

Hee hee... I love CLAMP, but I mostly love Sakura and Syaoran. I'm their mega fan... lol!!! The manga for Tsubasa is better than the anime though... but ah well. It can be a little predictable... but I like the mystery that's hanging between Tsubasa and xxxHolic...

But again, I like it because of Sakura and Syaoran. ^^

Yume Tsukai
--------------
Episode Count : 1

Break While Watching: 1. Someway around 3/4 of the anime.

First Impression:
Basically a story about a group of Dream Catchers (hence the title "Yume Tsukai") entering dreams that somehow escape into reality. Means that somebody's dream (which is a bad dream, so it's a nightmare) are turned into reality somewhere in the world and it's up to this group to find the owner of the dream & stop the nightmare that had materialized itself in the real world.

Hmmm, how to say this. If this anime out a couple of years earlier i might like it a way better. Cos to my eyes the anime just looks like it's not a recent years production. In term of characters designs, backgrounds, coloring, etc, the whole animation just looks like of older anime. So, with many current anime that i'd watched with usually high quality & have the new anime style looks, this anime "looks like older anime" factor is the only biggest flaw that i can made off.

Story pace wise, it seems to be episodic anime much like Jigoku Shoujo. You know, each episode got a character with nightmare problems & it got solved at the end of the episode style of story. As for the characters, we are introduced to 2 sisters that are Yume Tsukai, younger sister is the twin ponytail loli character while the older one reminds me of Elle from Happy World. Maybe because of the airhead-ness & easygoing vibes i got from the older sister. The nightmare that they faced is quite ok in term of the story behind it and the nightmare battle is quite cheesy but is still acceptable to me. I kinda like the ritual where the older sister try to find the connection between the nightmare & the owner of the dream. Blindfold FTW! Viva Rider! *cough cough*

Verdict:
All in all, an ok anime but since now is the season with gems like The Melancholy Of Suzumiya Haruhi, Ouran Kokou Host Club, School Rumble 2nd Semester & NANA (omg why all of this anime except for NANA have long names), i have to give this anime 5.5/10. I would gladly watch more episodes but not in any priority or what-so-ever.

School Rumble 2nd Semester
---------------------------
Episode Count : 1-3

Break While Watching: The hell? I can watch 26 episodes of this without a single break. Even not skipping OP & ED too.

First Impression:
School Rumble Rocks!!! No need to explains what it's all about. Season 1 was as glorious as this anime can get and 2nd Semester just keeps the awesome-ness going on. 2nd & 3rd episodes are just plain kewl. Survival game/lots of reference to Battle Royale/School Rumble style = PWNAGE!.
This 2 episodes alone had made this anime to my top 3 "i-can't-decide-which-is-better" anime list together with Ouran & Haruhi.

As for the new OP/ED. Many people in forums & blogs don't like it because they were comparing it to the 1st season OP/ED. As for me, i like both of them because the atmosphere & feelings the new OP/ED songs give me. For the OP, it give me the feeling of celebrating the returns of School Rumble casts for this new season + welcoming the new casts. Sentimental Generation indeed, just like the title of the song. It even makes me feel like reminiscing of my school year days although personally i don't have much to remember anyway. As for the ED, it give me the feeling of the maturity that the characters experienced (or will experience) in this anime. Although maybe the ED song more suitable for romance anime but since School Rumble also have its own shares of mixed romance in it, it's all fine. Final saying, both new OP/ED = thumbs up.

More notes:
1. Akira looks much cooler this time around.
2. Ichijou's singing has good English pronounciation in it. Made the song sounds much nicer just like Sowelu's song "Moon On The Water" in BECK anime.
3. Issit just me or they have a change in classmates or that their previous 1st season classmates suddenly all have a distinct looks & personality of their own?
4. Episode 2 survival game got no blood while episode 3 got lots of blood? I guess they entered a blood cheatcode for episode 3.
5. Masculine Eri = lolage.
6. Yakumo = still my suki suki suki <3
7. Episode 2 & 3 FTW!!! Eh, i did already mentioned that did i?
8. Itoko = As hot as ever. Otona no Yakumo ga hoshiina.......
9. Battle Royale homage FTW!!! I was really confused whether to laugh or to get emotioned about all the events because it's Sukuran anyway and the battle is fake, but the events sometimes really touched me. Really made me wanted to get my hand on Battle Royale manga now.
10. The Ganguro blonde chick looks hot.

Verdict:
9/10. Nothing is perfect in this world but this anime is as good as it can get. Must watch. Checking every day for new episodes. YAKUMO YAKUMO YAKUMO YAKUMO (x ∞)

Strawberry Panic
----------------
Episode Count : 1

Break While Watching: 1. At the 1st 10 min because of the slow pace of the introduction. It does get more exciting towards the end though.

First Impression:
Hmmm, what can i say? Yuri-esque anime with Marimite setting? First thing i notice is that the animation quality is quite so-so. I was under impression that this anime will have bright & lush colors like Marimite or Kannazuki No Miko but it's quite plain albeit the many colors used in the anime. As for character relationship, just say that till now nothing can beat HimekoxChikane (Kannazuki No Miko) pure yuri or Marimite casts for "pure & innocent girlxgirl relation that might turn into yuri later" relations. While i'm not against yuri i'm also not into it either, especially if the reason for yuri-ness seems weak & "untouching". As for story & settings, i guess having Marimite clone wannabe is fine now while waiting for the real deal later.

OP/ED don't give any impression to me, so they're plain normal.

Verdict:
I guess 6/10 is fine as for now. I'm willing to continue this anime after my top priority anime list. I'm hoping it will get better later.

NANA
-----
Episode Count : 1

Break While Watching: 0. Although i did have the thought to have a break at quite a boring earlier half, but i managed to get through and the rest of the episode was fantastic.

First Impression:
What can i say, NANA single-handedly crowned Yazawa Ai as the Queen of Shoujo Manga. That must be some reputation for this title. Thankfully, the anime delivers the manga beautifully, thus another anime hit was born. Basic story of this title is simple, 2 girls named Nana, both with quite a different personality met and then live together in an apartment. Story continues from there.

Beautiful animation, have style like Paradise Kiss but not overly stylish. I guess one aspect that made me dropped ParaKiss was that the art was too stylish that sometimes its quite repelling, other than the facts that ppl said ParaKiss didn't really deliver that much in anime version. I hope that will not be the case with NANA. Character design crews are different than ParaKiss, so that's a good starter. Although both titles are following Ai Yazawa artstyle, NANA is easier on my eyes. The backgrounds reminds me a bit of Honey & Clover. Ah, iina kanji.

The OP gives a nice vibes to this anime while the ED is a nice, slow melancholic song. The ED reminds me of LOVELESS ED because somehow it's like conveying the feeling the characters have for each other. BTW, for those who didn't watch LOVELESS, atleast grab an episode just to watch the OP & ED sequence. Both are simply nice & beautiful, song-wise and also animation-wise.

Verdict:
8/10. It would join the A+ rank if not cos of my prudence stand of ParaKiss disappointment & i don't have much info on the manga (only read vol. 1 around 7 years ago). If the story continues in good pace it will have no problem to rise to a 9 later.

Kyoto Animation – If there’s anime deity, then KyoAni’s its prophet. Absolutely the darling of the anime world now, for good reasons like Fumoffu, The 2nd raid, AIR TV,The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi and Kanon 2006. With KyoAni, it’s not anime, it’s art[/i].

YES, a friend of mine did not want to watch xxx Holic BECAUSE of the ART!!! have to agree they were long... but well i guess it can't be helped like you mentioned. The Theme song were OK i supposed, they are suitable for the anime but i'd still prefer "Kiseki" the song for xxx Holic's movie (well kiseki or 'miracle' is not the theme song but it was really nice!)

TRC ah... yes, kinda predictable type of story and plot so i didn't follow. I used to like CC Sakura back then but lose interest pretty quickly although Sakura and Syaoran is also one of my fav pairing ^^ ...

loki>> it's CLAMP by the way ^^ ... and Princess Princess is basically supposed to be a 'shoujo' manga (no, not the main character as the uke  ). i read from one of the site that translates the Princess Princess manga and it says or should i say the category was under 'shoujo' ... though it certainly don't look like shoujo to me or do they mean it's for shoujo? lol either way im fine with it... if you like er, shounen-ai stuffs, you can also try Gakuen Heaven...

Suga Shikao... the one who sang for the movie's theme song is such a good singer. ^^ I like Sanagi... but I seem to like 19 sai a lot... Lol!!

Nana

Episode count: 2

First Impression

I've read the first volume of the manga... and so I was quite excited to know that an anime had just come out. The opening scene was exactly like the anime, and I thought the art was done really well.

And when the opening scene came in, I was really impressed. I really believe the opening song suited the anime (and even the ending!).

The story revolves around two girls who're both named Nana. Komatsu Nana is the easily excitable girl, who's the Queen of love at first sight. Oosaki Nana is a lead vocalist for a band named 'Blast', she's strong willed and tough than a lot of girls.

The anime starts off at the second book of the manga, where the girls first meet and how they end up staying together in Tokyo. The second episode then follows the first book, which shows Komatsu Nana's past and how she came to be the way she is when she first met Oosaki. I think this will go on for a few episodes, showing both the girl's past and then back to the storyline.

Overall, I'm really happy with the animation and the music so far! But whether the anime will do justice to the manga, or maybe even surpass the manga... is something that I'm looking out for.

Overall, I'm pretty happy about it. ^^
