I've tried converting it but the end result is my file does not have sounds.
I don't know whether, I didn't install the correct codec or the converter have problems with converting the matroska file.

Can you recommend me any converters that may do the job good + the best codecs to convert files.

Why would you want to convert to AVI? It's really an outdated format. Moreover it doesn't support DVD-style features like switchable-subtitles and multiple audio tracks.

Unless you have a good reason to make it avi, best leave it as-is.

Converters aplenty.  Most of the user-friendly ones can do the job but often you won't get the best quality. Some combination of freeware ones such as VirtualdubMod + AVISynth + VFW codecs can do perfect conversion, but require some learning.

get mkv extract gui,( http://corecodec.org/projects/mkvextractgui/ ) to extract the files needed from the mkv file,

then get the standard virtualdub ( http://www.virtualdub.org ) and vfw codecs ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ffvfw.htm ) & the subtitler filter ( http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_filters ) to add the subtitles.

if extracted audio file is in mp3/aac/ogg format, get dbpoweramp ( http://www.dbpoweramp.com ) and all necessary codecs to convert it to wav

open ur extracted video file in virtualdub

in virtualdub, under video, select filters, subtitler amd get ur subtitle, then select compression and choose the desired codec and bitrate (preferably ffdshow/ffvfw)

and then under audio, select wav as source and look for ur converted wav file, make sure full processing mode is selected. then choose compression ( before tht get this is u like mp3 as ur codec, http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_ACM_Codec.htm ) and select lame with the desired bitrate.

whn all is set, just save as avi, and wait

this is the safest way i know to convert mkv to avi and it doesn't cause lag in subs or audio, but the subtitler can only do simple subtitles, meaning no fancy karaoke style op/ed and stuff. i did it with my school rumble series and it turned out okay ( winavi can't read mkv so i was forced to do this)

Because some are encoded in H264 format and that doesn't work well on slower pc.

I'm too lazy to demux etc so i usually use Alltoavi converter. It's open source and functions properly.

http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/

Also try Riverpast's Video Cleaner but that's a shareware.

Thank you for the infos!
I know I should keep the mkv files as it is but it seems hard for me to convert it to a DVD or VCD.
Therefore converting it first into avi then into DVD or VCD.
Plus I also need to split it for VCD...

Before we go to the conversion & splitting:- First of all, you need to find out what exactly the type of audio tracks are there in your MKV.

Download this program: mkvtoolnix and then run it.
You'll see a fairly scary interface. Click on the 'add' button.
Select the MKV file and open.
Note down everything that is listed inside the 'Tracks:' box. And then post here for us to figure out.
