somehow all I have the most knowledge of is to create some fancy, fiery fire effects which I don't even think it's fancy... which I come up with my own way of doing it. Just tell me how you think of it, just go to the URL I posted previously. Some of the pictures posted there are my Onee-chan's pictures, since she is posting both my and her deviations.

actually what you did is great.
Maybe u didn't satisfy enough due to its color and blending.
It looks so red. Remember when you look at a fire you can see
different sets of color in a flame. There is blue, violet, red, orange and
yellow.
try these methods and see which one suits you best

for the guy...you should add more lighting and shadow to get the effect.
Since the fire is on left then shadow should leaves to the right.
try adding some yellowish tone on the face, hair and clothes which are facing the flame.

Actually, that DevArt is my sister's... she posted some of my artwork. To know which is of my work, search for artworks with the watermark Flamewiz, Flamewizard of AnimExtremist (not case-sensitive). These are my works.
