Added a couple new shows to my watch list:

Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls (for the body count)
Sousei no Aquarion (for mocking value)

Waiting for:

Eureka 7 (sky-surfing robots with a hint of FLCL style)

Well, Starship Operators got my vote so far as the best anime in 2005.

This is kinda of hardcore scifi anime which is written for people of my age group.

Other than that, I am kinda queasy with some anime out in this season so far. But oh well, that is just being me, in absolute terms.

Clow, your list doesn't seem to have Kamichu in it...

.. and that's blasphemy because untill Kamichu came along, I might have put Starship Operators as my most highly rated anime for 2005. Though only half the year is done so by the end of the year something may have knocked Kamichu off the top spot.

Like fellowhoodlum, I do watch Sousei no Aquarion. Unlike fellowhoodlum though, I actually quite like the show because a show which tries to combine all elements of all popular anime and has a transformation / merge sequence where the characters relate it to having sex is just... just... um... fascinating. Yeah, that's it... fascinating. Besides, the charcaters don't repeat the same lines all the time ... they actually do have variants and they're all jokes about sex.

That and when I only had the first episode I watched the potion just before the "Go Aquarion!" sequence like 50 times because I so loved the song that came before it. (It really pumped me up)

And after that song became the intro song I extracted the song and played it over and over again for days.

In case anyone managed to miss it, you must watch:

Kamichu

This amazing show gets my vote because it banishes the stereotype that all Anime is about Mecha and tentacles. Better yet, this show has excellent art and animation standards not to mention a fabulous sound score. (I definitely must get the soundtrack for this Anime)

The brilliant supposition found throught the show will make even your non-anime arty-farty type frineds impressed as it contains many scences that reference works of art such as the famous 'Creation of Adam' by Michelangelo (as seen on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel).

This is a show that simply has to be seen and all I can really say to you is:

You will BELIEVE.

Firstly, the song's great. Most Yoko Kanno soundtracks tend to be Smiley

There's nothing wrong with combining every known anime cliche into a potpourri mecha show, some of my favourite shows are like that. (e.g., RahXephon).  When they try it with Aquarion, it feels like it lacks empathy, or charisma. Like the show was created by a combination of marketing and accountancy committees. Soulless. Shocked

The ensemble cast feels... forced. Other than the mecha and the soundtrack, everything else feels awkward to me.  Watch shows with ensemble cast like RahXephon, Last Exile and Eureka 7; you will start to perceive the difference.

Still, it might be worth a laugh or two.

Warren Ellis sums it up better than I can:

Since this is about anime's in 2005, gonna use it for my first episode's thoughts from now on instead of the usual "what are you watching" thread since I mostly watch the first episodes of any series before storing them for later viewing.

Ok, just caught Solty Rei ep1
From the OP sequence... Looks like it's something like BakuTen in a more GITS like setting.
Cyborgs.. Check.  Female combat squads... Check. Mechs... Check. Elite superhuman (Or should I say cyborg?) lead with amnesia cliche?... Check.
Hmm... looks like gonna be a cliche series. :?

Ok, with that said and done, the first episode is about a cyborg with super strength and no memories somehow tagging along with a bounty hunter. She's being hunted by an organization of somesort (name or purpose not revealed yet) and eventually drops literally into the bounty hunter's life when running away from the organization. Being a loner, the bounty hunter tries to get rid fo her but she keeps following him. Then, cue in the mandatory "unleash the power" scene to show her mettle. Then they would stick together for the time being to use each other's strength? Sorry, not in this episode. Tongue

Some analysis -> The mechs look like they came from GITS..? The girl's hairdo is horrendous (To me), the action sequence looks well done...
-------------------
Moving on, review of Paradise Kiss ep1

3 words -> not my taste. (My taste can be summed into the 3G's - Guns, Girls & Gears )

From the first episode, we get to know the bunch of people from Paradise Kiss (ParaKiss in short), a fashion label group comprising of students from an art institution. They're looking for a model for their fashion show, and they stumble upon a student "drone" (ie "Studies first, leisure later" person) What follows is the clash of cultures (when paintbrushes cross paths with pens, fireworks guaranteed!) The choice is her's, to go on with her boring life or take a ride on the wild side. Tongue

One word of caution though, if your someone looking for eye-candy, you'll should be staying really, really far from this. The whole thing looks to be made on a low budget. The characters are drawn real world style (no big bug eyes and barbie figures). And there's a lot of still backgrounds. It does have some comedic elements though. Music is not my style too (I'm not good with music but I guess it's more of pop or rock music for the OP :?)

Somehow, eventhough I don't really agree with the style, I enjoyed the first episode.
------------------------------------

Shakugan no Shana ep1

A girl in trench coat with blazing red hair and eyes wielding a long katana... Cooooooooool~! Could have mistaken her for a bishounen instead Cheesy

ok, on with the story.
Sakai (main guy lead) leads a boring life. One day, that all changes when he is caught with a monster who starts eating people's souls from within a barrier (kekkai in jap, something like an alternate dimension). Being the only one able to move = special. He's some sort of "mistess" (I thought they were saying mistress instead, which would have been odd ) carrying something valuable to heaven and crimson (i guess they're referring to hell :?) within him. Just as the monster was about to eat him, the main girl enters holding the katana and dispatches the enemy. Later, when the barrier is lifted and everything goes back to normal... or so he thought. The people who had their souls eaten have a temporary replacement soul placed in them, and to his surprise, he too is carrying a replacement soul too. What does that mean... I don't really know.

Animation looks nice, OP was ok. The lead girls head looks oversized though. I'll be looking for more. Tongue
-------------------------------

Black Cat ep1

13 = bad luck. Especially when 13 means Train Heartnet @ Black Cat, an assassin of Chronus. He whispers something like "I come to bring misfortune" before moving for a silent kill. I give points for style
On the other hand, we have a sweeper who does anything for a reward. They go after the same target, and 13 takes the target out first. As silently as he came, he leaves.

Animation looks nice, OP was nice. Yeah I use the same words as above. The difference is, this could be a duel-based anime, with a heavy emphasis on duels which may end up being a long long anime judging from the OP.

sigh... looks like plenty of things to watch these time round... and I don't have time for them... -_-
