well u must see wat sort of friends u have.........
if they are the crazy and violent type, then u could have something violent nd with loads of action like elfen lied...........
if they are the friendly and nice type, then something nice like fruit basket or spirited away.........
but if ur friends are perverted dogs, then watch something a little hentai........
though i cant imagine the fact that ur watching porn with ur friends........
very disturbing.........

Dead Leaves
Super Kuma-san
Cat Soup
No one's paying attention to the screen anyway, they're there to party.
If people rather watch stuff, then something's wrong with the party.

As has been stated, the best type of show to air depends largely upon the type of audience you have. Also, while Grave of the Fireflies, Saikano and other shows of their type are brilliant shows, I would not air those in a party because it would sour the mood. Generally you'll want more upbeat or exciting shows.
Naturally most of my opinions tend to co-relate to the choices Stormy made so of course
Macross Zero OVA
comes highly recomended especially if you have a killer sound system with good bass speakers.
Stormy did mention
Samurai Champloo
and I assume I know which screening he's refering to (we tried Macross Zero OVA but the bass kept skipping out on us somehow) in which case I'd like to add that the 'circle of close friends' he mentioned also included someone who was a great fan of the Manga 'Vagabond' and thus would probably have really liked a screening of
Shura no Toki
. The later episodes may no longer deal as much with Musashi, but then it does get better with the addition of Tsubura along with Iori coming to the fore (a character featured in Vagabond but not greatly expanded upon). Thus, you end up with a show that rivals Kazemakaze Tsukikage Ran for fight scenes (especially since Tsubura takes the role of female hand to hand martial artist that Meow-chan occupies.)
Then again, both Macross Zero and Shura no Toki are testosterone laden shows and if I wanted to dispense testosterone, I wouldn't bother with anime but run Troy instead.
Honey & Clover/Azumanaga Daioh
were also mentioned. They are slightly slow though and if you want a show with lots of characters to compare personality types with then I suggest:
Sensei no Ojikan
- similar to Azumanaga Daoih but containing far more characters whose character traits are explored even from the first episode. Unlike Azumanaga and H&C which reveal the character personalities over a few episodes, Sensei no Ojikan explores them from the start and then lets you see how they interact in the later episodes. Main problem would be that all the guys are quite warped in someway. (Someone mentioned to me that Watabe was quite normal... but really anyone who thinks that just goes to prove something.)
So, what do show if you want an Anime but have a non-otaku crowd? Allow me to suggest:
Kamichu
This amazing show gets my vote because it banishes the stereotype that all Anime is about Mecha and tentacles. Better yet, this show has excellent art and animation standards not to mention a fabulous sound score. (I definitely must get the soundtrack for this Anime)
The brilliant supposition found throught the show will make even your non-anime arty-farty type frineds impressed as it contains many scences that reference works of art such as the famous 'Creation of Adam' by Michelangelo (as seen on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel).
This is a show that simply has to be seen and all I can really say to you is:
You will BELIEVE.
