Grave of the Fireflies.

It's excellent. So good, in fact, I will never watch it again.

If your a pacifist, you'd go with mainstream (No need for me to mention what right? Tongue)

If your around to promote anime, go with some rare but nice titles.
(the popular ones need no more introduction...)

If you don't care what others wanna watch, go with what YOU want.

Macross Zero OVA, Elfen Lied, NTHT, Azumanga Daioh.

Last time some of my friends watched Bokatsatsu Tenshi Dokuro Chan, a brillant anime that used Freudian symbolism as bulwark of its jokes. Needless  to say the anime is utterly retarded but very funny because Freudian reference is done well.

Certain crowd has certain preference. My close circle of friends enjoyed Champloo thoroughly.

Bokatsatsu Tenshi Dokuro Chan would be the best choice imho.. Honey and Clover or Azumanga Daioh is amusing to watch in a group. Then after the anime, compare to each friend whose character is which. ^_^
