Anything that just adds more CPU overhead without improving application perfomance is pretty much pointless.

well i think the problem is settle ~~~i think~~~~

It seems that when i uninstall the norton 2002 and install the Avast
my search window at the startup aint operate when i click on it,
my windows media player cant work,
cant operate the IE explorer
cant do the "restore system"

surf the net and found that when uninstalling the norton the above are the most common thing that would happen to ur XP.
so to operate the search window back
just go to start->run->type the below command:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wshom.ocx
each command should prompt a confirmation box saying it has been succesful.

next  i unintsall and reinstall the Avast

to fix any registery problems that still exist in the XP just go to this site.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

and like what tsunami mentioned keep the avast and ad aware up date.

Avast will automatically update the virus database when you go online (That explains the lag when you login to the internet sometimes) and also alerts you when there are program updates for it by default...

im still sticking with norton although i would really like to change to mcafee. norton AV itself is ok but it is not up to the challenge w/o other utils in systemworks. but the utils in systemworks still have some bugs. ad-,mal and spyware arent probs anymore but sometimes, some unwanted scripts managed to get thru....

Question here - Anyone ever successfully remove any virus from their com by using antivirus software? I've tried a few (Norton, PC-cilin and Avast) but none seem to be able to remove viruses inside the system.. the most is they can detect them but not remove them... have to delete the files instead...

I think that depends on how the virus infects a file.

If it infects by attaching its code into the file, then your AV should be able to recover it.  If it does by replacing some of the file's contents with its code, then chances are the file would remain damaged even though your AV could remove the virus.

I had better luck recovering files with NAV than with AVG.  But I still use AVG, because it's free, eats less resources, and being able to do what I need most - detect and remove 'virtually' any virus.

it seem by doing this helps IE to open msn browser properly. If u didnt do this then when u try to logon to windows update or anything realted to msn , it will only show a blank screen.
