So I was lazing about (hey it's Sunday) watching cable and when I flip to G4, Cinematech (my favorite G4tv show) is on and playing clips of games that were shown at the Tokyo Gameshow. 2 of them really caught my eye:
Demento
So like, hot babes in games are a staple right now and heck, with Game babes showing up in Playboy (Oct 2004 issue if you did not know) it just goes to indicate how far along female archetypes have come along in computer games.
Demento seems similar to the Resident Evil line of game except this time, the hot babe does not kick ass. Nope... she is a total and utter: Damsel in Distress.
As far as I can tell, the whole game is about running away from monsters. While this might seem lame to you guys, it's something quite fascinating for me.
Since time immemorial, we've always played the archetype of the hero(ine) who kicks ass and takes names. The reason for this is because we'd rather do something to affect the world rather than be affected by it... something which games do really well as a means of relieving us from reality.
This game reverses things and because of that is unlikely to do well. But still, I'm going to look forward to this because of the twist on the way it's designed.
Okami
The other game that caught my eye, Okami is of course about a wolf, which you play. This wolf has the powers of spirits and nature to call upon and is really wonderful because while in the wild, the wolf makes grass grow at its feet. But what really stands out is that the whole game is cell shaded. And not just any kind of cell shading either but of a cartoon style similar to that of the Edo era. Truly beautiful and needs to be beheld to be appreciated.
