Stormy001 has often noted that I have very strange tastes when it comes to Anime and is often bemused by whatever I'm watching with interest. One of those that shocked him (albiet only mildly) was my interest in Futakoi.
Futakoi is your typical 'harem' Anime much like Love Hina or Tenchi Muyo except instead of 5 girls after one guy, Futakoi has 12 ... the 12 girls come in the form of 6 pairs of identical twins (Thus you could argue there are only 6 girls since the personalities are similar - or 7/8 if you're picky about one/two of the pairs having distinct personailty traits).
Now if you're looking for good animation quality or a complex plot, Futokoi does NOT have it... indeed the most impressive thing that it had was that it got to the point of having bus adverts. (Which is to say, not very far)
http://www.ufotable.com/community/diary/img/popupimg/0182.jpgFutakoi is incredibly sweet. (Think condensed milk with extra sugar) I absolutely adored the OP and liked the serries itself because it was a non-ecchi, non-violent, non-action type show. It's the kind of easy to watch show that doesn't tax any brain cells. A somewhat mellow sitcom if you will.
This makes it seem an odd choice for a twisted individual like myself but I always had a
feeling about Futakoi which was confirmed when it's sequel
Futakoi Alternative come out.
Futakoi Alternative
---------------------
F:Alternative is set in a completely alternate world from the original. The main protagonist is now in his 20's and runs a detective agency while the girls oddly enough are still the same age as in the previous serries.
Where Futakoi was a mellow sitcom, F:Alternative is a fast paced, action packed slapstick comedy. (Fanservice and Ecchi levels have also been spiked tremendously) It has zany sitations and totally off-the-wall plot reminecent of other weird works like Puny Puny Poemy or Keroro Gunzo. I'm hoping that it might follow in more serious undelying tones like found in Abenobashi Magical Shopping District or Fooley Kooley, though I sincerely doubt it. (But I can hope)
Because F:Alternative is a sequel, there is no time spent on character development as it is assumed the viewer is already familiar with the personalities presented in the previous settings. This can work both for and against the serries since they don't have to waste time developing the characters but at the same time new viewers might be left puzzled as to why some of the characters behave the way they do.
AnimeNfo oddly enough lists this as "Historical Settings" and only has 5 pairs of twins on the character list. (The offcial site seems to have all 6 pairs though I can't read so I can't confirm this.)
Plus:
+ Action, lots of it.
+ Kawaii Twins armed to the teeth with Guns, Guns and more Guns.
+ Totally different from the original serries*
Minus:
- No coherent plot (yet)
- Mindless slapstick comedy
- Totally different from the original serries*
*It's not totally TOTALLY different, after all, the charatcers are just mostly the same (except they carry more weapons and are more prone to violence) and the shows still manage to end on some touchy feely sort of tone. But the genre is deffinitely different so if you've seen the original, be ready for a shocker!
