Hi there anime fans! I'm new here, I'm from the Philippines but my family have been travelling. We just came from Singapore and now my Dad has been assigned here in KL. I'm not sure whether this is the right place for me to post this, so admins and mods do let me know. Anyway... since I'm new in Malaysia I'm excited to find out if there are a lot of Anime Events here as well? In Singapore there were only gaming and cosplay events (i.e. Cosfest, EOY, GCA, etc) and the biggest and greatest so far was AFA08!In the Philippines it's also the same, most of the events are in gaming and cosplay (Level Up LIVE, OzineFest, etc). How about here in Malaysia? How big is the Anime Fanbase? How big are the events here? Which events are the biggest and how many people usually turn up in these events? I can't wait to be a part of these events! I tried to check in the Internet but I don't know why it's so hard to find information, I only found ACGC and ComicFiesta and that's it. Any friendly reliable sources there, please help? Thanks!

I'm not sure how they are run in Philippines but to be honest, while we do have quite a few anime events, they are rather low-key. The focus seems to be on cosplay and gaming (which you clearly are not so much into - neither am I). I used to go to many conventions in US and those are huge. You get all the latest stars in the anime industry attending direct from Japan. The amount of anime goods like doujinshi is amazing (obviously with our censorship laws here, many things are not sold). There are all kinds of competitions and prizes (I remember winning tons of prizes for taking part in "Guess anime theme songs" and Anime Trivia competitions). There are workshops and for those who are so inclined, they have numerous video rooms where you can watch the latest anime from Japan and because there are so many, they even divide these mini cinemas into categories (old school, shoujo, etc.)
Sigh...I'm optimistic but I think it will take a while before we have conventions like that over here.....

Sorry Yuna but anime events here are as Piano said, low key and small. And mostly tied with gaming too.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the responses! In your opinion though... if you're going to rate this events which would you rank the top 5? COMIC Fiesta, Bon Odori, ACGC, GACC and Enima Carnival? or did I miss anything else? Hmmm... I'm not sure how they are run in Philippines but to be honest, while we do have quite a few anime events, they are rather low-key. WOW!!! that's sweet! The games seem really exciting... when I was in California I was not able to visit these events coz my Mum and Dad were both busy and I can't drive yet... sigh... What are the other attractions and competitions they had? I'm so jealous you got to attend these events!!!

Kinda hard to say. In my opinion Comic Fiesta is pretty much the best event around. The rest... can't really say much about them. And 1 more thing, Bon Odori is a Japanese cultural event, not an anime related event. If you don't want to offend others, don't turn it into 1.

hahahahahahaha yah, Bon Odori is a Japanese festival and it's held annually in Matsushita Stadium.
The feeling is different for both. I enjoy BO coz it's so Japanese. The food, the dance, music... drums, and best of all, YUKATAAAAAAAA! We normally gather in a spot and makan-makan while we chat and catch up with each other...
As for Comic Fiesta, it's more to flamboyant and extravagant costumes, goodlooking guys/ girls, photo sessions, stalking catching your favourite cosplayer and entertainments like cosplay competiton, dances, karaokes, sketches, dramas, buying doujin(s), posters, collectibles etc etc
Even so, we're mostly there for gathering ^________^ ...no, accurately, there's a reason for the gathering. Don't you think we've become that these few years? We can't gather without these events taking place.

IGNORED *ps: yes, feign ignorance is the best... And yah DD's right, normal gathering feels pretty aimless coz there isn't much to look forward than to meet each other. then again, we could all go for a movie!!!
